Allahabad, originally known as Prayaga, is the religious centre of Hinduism since time immemorial. It is believed to be the spot where Lord Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world. “prayagasya praveshshu papam nashwati tatkshanam ”. All sins are cleaned with entry in Prayag.
The three celestial rivers meeting in the Triveni Sangam at Allahabad are the Yamuna, Ganga and mythical river Saraswati. Sangam is the place where the confluence of three holy rivers takes place. It is the centre of attraction for hundreds and thousands of religious travelers. People come from different places for Asti Visarjanam (Ash Immersion). It is believed that those whose ashes are immersed in Allahabad are hailed in the abode of Lord Shiva and Vishnu.The Brahma Purana says bathing at Prayag in the month of Magha at Sangam bestows results equal to millions of Ashwamedha yajnas.
Prayag is famous for historic Kumbh Mela which is held in every 12 years and at that time crores of devotees from all over the world come here to take a holy dip in the Sangam. Prayag Kumbha Mela is the largest and holiest of all melas. It is said that the Kumbh Mela is arranged in this place since 3000 years.
People from all over the world come to prayag for scattering the ashes of the departed loved ones at Triveni Sangam. This ritual is called as Asti Nimajjanam. As per our vedic scriptures, Asti Visarjan is prescribed to be conducted in a flowing waters. This is because this ritual consists of scattering of cremated ashes and bones of the departed loved ones. This act of immersion washes away the impurities of the soul and helps it to attain salvation.
Prayag is also called as king of all the Tirths, Prayagraj and it is one of the most sacred place for performing pind daan in India after Varanasi. Pind daan at Prayag is generally performed at the banks of river Ganga, Yamuna or at the Sangam site itself.
